Dissertation (Smaller) Questions

As I pass the halfway point of comp reading, I have a growing list of smaller questions that I realize I need to address in my dissertation. In order to keep them straight, here they are.
  • What is the first association of the Devil with a dog? Is the dog image used with more frequency than others? Is this evidence of strength of English folklore?

  • What is the significance of the Devil carrying people off on his back? Does it have to do with Bakhtin's theory of "lower" associations? Or Markov's references to visual rhetoric? Of making the Devil separate?

  •  What is the significance of the Devil being shown as sucking souls out of mouth? Is it a conflation of incubus/succubus folklore?
